Introducing Eben Wilson, Original Classic athlete and beloved climbing buddy. Eben has been a friend for years. He live, eats, and breathes rock climbing, and we love him for it. We recently sat down with Eben to get a glimpse of his world…
CURRENT TOWN: I’ve been camping in my tent / truck for the better part of eight months now and have been all over the country. Currently, I am camping in the greater Boone, NC area. So good.
GIVE US A GLIMPSE INTO YOUR WORLD. WHAT IS A NORMAL DAY? I wake up with a stiff back and neck next to my stinky dog who shares a tent with me and day dream about the days when I had a bed with sheets and a hot shower and didn’t have to fight for position with my dog. Then I face reality and make a fire to cook breakfast, do dishes in the creek, go bouldering, make another fire for dinner, shower in the creek and end the day with some reading. Some days at night I realize I didn’t talk out loud at any point during the day. I am a hobo.
CURRENT PROJECT THAT YOU’RE MOST PSYCHED ON: Trying to send Hot Rod at Grandmother’s. It has moved from a physical battle into a mental one now.
PROUDEST SEND: Proudest send in recent memory was a climb in flagstaff called Jean Valjean. Highball battle for me that took many sessions and kept me incredibly insecure for every move. Love the fear.
FAVORITE CLIMBING AREA: I love Squamish, but Boone has my heart. The best rock in the country combined with the most beautiful scenery makes it a special place for me.
YOUR ORIGINAL CLASSIC: Favorite OC problem is the Thimble located at the Barn. (Joey Henson’s Boulders) Stout.
PERSONAL HERO(s): Climbing heroes are Jill Church and Nick Vosbein. They are relentless in their pursuit of crushing everything in their path and are the type of humans that you want in your corner no matter what situation arises.
WHY DO YOU LOVE CLIMBING? I love fear, punishment and success. Climbing gives me all three of these every time I go out.
CRIMPS OR SLOPERS? Crimp me.
MUSIC IN ROTATION: Cream. Disraeli Gears. Ginger Baker is my favorite musician of the moment.
FUTURE? Future??? I usually don’t plan farther then a day or two ahead. I imagine I’ll have to get a job at some point with steady income. Also the winter will either force me to rent an apt or head back to Hueco. I’ll worry about the future when it gets here.
True that my brother. True that. We’ll see you out soon.
